On August 30, 2012, AREVA once again showed its support for the education and training of young people in Niger by partnering with the NGO Ateliers Sans Frontières (Workshops Without Borders – ASF)* to donate computer equipment to the Abdou Moumouni Dioffo University of Niamey. With an enrollment of more than 8,000 students, this institution of higher learning offers training programs in several disciplines and conducts diverse research in support of local economic development.
The donation, which includes two servers, 100 desktop and 10 laptop computers, was made possible by the partnership between AREVA and the association ASF, whose mission is to help narrow the digital divide and to improve physical conditions in schools in the countries where AREVA has mining operations.
Consistent with AREVA’s Charter of Values, which places sustainable development and protection of the environment at the center of the Group’s strategy, the university will give this equipment to the ASF at its end of life. It will then be recycled according to applicable standards in the association’s authorized recycling center in the Paris region. The university has also agreed to inform students of the proper ways of using the equipment and of the need to preserve the environment by seeing that waste electrical and electronic equipment is properly disposed of.
Ibrahim Courmo, Deputy General Manager of AREVA Mines Niger, told the many guests at the official ceremony that “education and training are priceless, and it is impossible to do too much to defeat ignorance through the quest for knowledge and know-how.” The Vice Rector of the university expressed his satisfaction with AREVA’s actions and presented it with a plaque “for its inestimable service to the University of Niamey.”
