January 08, 2014
On December 29, 2013, AREVA joined with the Fédération Nigérienne d’Athlétisme (FNA) in sponsoring a 10-km cross-country race for students from large schools in the country. Ninety-five young people from all regions of Niger represented their schools in the event.
Attending the competition, which was kicked off by the president of the FNA, were the director general of sports in the Ministry of Youth and Sports, managers from the mining companies operated by AREVA, and many other guests and spectators.
The young Nigeriens taking part in the race showed outstanding ability in cross-country running. The boy who came in first covered the 10-km course in less than 32 minutes, while the winning girl did it in less than 39 minutes. Both are from the Niamey region and said they were delighted to have competed in the race, which is unique in Niger.
The president of the FNA, Colonel Djibrilla Issa Hamidou, thanked AREVA for its financial and logistical support in organizing this event. He also noted that this was only the beginning of their cooperation, as AREVA will be giving sports gear to all participants in the cross-country race and organizing other events to promote athletics in Niger.
